This is an invaluable course. It is the only place I know where watershed management from top to bottom, neighborhood interest to technical implementation are tied together holistically.

Well worth the time and money, plus you also build a valuable network.

Great information. To represent another part of the issue - I work with landowners in urban/suburban areas, trying to convince them to test their soils before doing lawn fertilization. So many homeowners are applying too many nutrients, which run into their streets and storm sewers, and into their neighborhood retention ponds. The pond then goes through an algae bloom, and when the algae die, the fish might soon follow. It's a nasty cycle that many urban/suburban folks don't understand!

Nitrogen oxides are formed when the oxygen and nitrogen in the air react with one another during combustion. Responsible Green Holidaymaker

Is there much being done anywhere in Indiana on using our cast-offs from the forest industry for cellulosic ethanol production? With all the lumber yards and veneer plants we have it seems a real fit. And with the Emerald Ash Borer losses that we will soon face, there is time to get facilities ready for this large influx of woody material. I could also see large numbers of fast growing tree species planted beside riparian areas with the intention of harvesting these strips. This would leave the riparian buffers for soil and water quality and keep crop lands in production for food stuffs while leaving crop residue on the land.

The website looks great. I am looking forward to spending some time getting aquainted with it and finding out where things are and what all is on here. I love the photograph above. Scheryl Vaughn, Boone County Soil & Water Conservation District.

Thanks to Leah Harden of Greater Wabash River RC&D and Sarah Brichford of Wildcat Guardians for such an information packed evening.

So...there is a LOGJAM. Do you dare touch it or think about clearing it without incurring the wrath of DNR?

Well, if it is a simple jam that is not too far along and hasn't begun to accumulate sediment or block the watercourse AND can be removed with HAND TOOLS, you're in luck.

You have a "General License-without notification" to use HAND TOOLS to remove the jam. No one notified you that you have the license and you don't have to notify DNR (government at its most efficient).

Check the Resources section of the website for Debris Removal Guidelines.

If the logjam is more substantial and will require some heavy equipment, then you will probably need a "General License-with notification" or a "Permit".

Also remember, that a lot of wooded corridors along streams may be wooded wetlands and wetlands are regulated by IDEM and may not have ANY fill placed in them without a permit.

It is always best to check first than be caught later.

If you have a group that would be interested in a similar presentation, contact George Bowman, Assistant Director Division of Water, gbowman@dnr.in.gov or (317) 232-4166
